Our Curriculum

What are IGCSE, Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Levels?

These are the British High School leaving qualifications.

CAMBRIDGE SECONDARY 1

The Cambridge Secondary 1 is the equivalent of grades 8 and 9. The course is well rounded, exposing students to a variety of subjects with particular emphasis on mathematics, sciences and English. This ensures that students have adequate grounding to comfortably manage the IGCSE and later the AS level mathematics and sciences.

IGCSE

IGCSE is the 10th and 11th year of schooling and is equated by SAQA as the equivalent of Grade 11 (NQF3).

AS Levels

AS Levels are the 12th year of schooling and are evaluated by the South African Matriculation Board as the equivalent of Senior Certificate subjects (NQF4) passed at the Higher Grade, or under the new NSC system 7,6,5 or 4 pass which is a necessary requirement for University Entrance (Matric with Endorsement).

A Levels

A Levels are the 13th year of schooling and are generally only necessary if you are applying to go to certain universities in the UK.

These qualifications are recognised locally by the South African Matriculation Board for entrance into South African Universities as well as by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority)

(See useful links on our website to check requirements by SAQA/HESA and Unisa)

Students not wishing to study for a degree can obtain a Senior Certificate which allows access to Diploma Courses and is far simpler to obtain than University Matric i.e. Matric with Endorsement. The only requirement by SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) is that one of the subjects chosen must be English Language or Afrikaans.

IS A SECOND LANGUAGE NECESSARY?

Although Afrikaans is offered at Greenwich College, unlike the South-African Matric a second language is optional and students may enter University in South-Africa with English alone. (Foreign Conditional Exemption). Students are not required to pass all their subjects in one sitting in order to pass a Grade. Any subject passed is logged at Cambridge as a credit and students are free then to concentrate on other subjects. Should they wish to improve on their pass mark, the subject may be written again. The Matric Board does however require that all subjects are passed in any two years (4 sittings) if a University exemption is required
